Hypnosis is a state characterized by increased suggestibility, relaxation and heightened imagination. Clinical hypnosis is an altered state of awareness, perception or consciousness that is used, by trained hypnotherapists

You will not become unconscious and you will be aware of everything at all times. Your will is not weakened in any way. You are in control and cannot be made to do anything against your will. You will not begin to reveal information you wish to keep secret. Hypnosis is not sleep.

One common misconception is that a hypnotized person loses their will and is partially or completely under the command of the hypnotist. Nothing could be further from the truth. This unfortunate belief is reinforced by many stage hypnotists. You are in control of yourself, and cannot be made to do anything that is against your will.

Hypnosis, particularly the deeper forms, can appear to be like sleep because the person’s body is typically very still and quiet. There is usually a great deal of mental activity, and measurements of brain activity during hypnosis show a significant level of neurological activity.

Hypnosis is not a belief system. Hypnosis is not a religion. If you have a normally functioning brain you have already experienced self-hypnosis. You just don’t know how to use it. That is the job of the hypnotherapist.

It is important to chose a hypnotherapist who is trained, experienced and certified. Since hypnotherapists are not required to be licensed it is important to make sure that they are certified by a credible and ethical organization. The “National Guild of Hypnotists” and the “American Council of Hypnotist Examiners” are two of the most impactful groups of this kind. They both have systems in place to provide oversight to the hypnotherapists that they certify. The hypnotherapist should have years of experience as a hypnotherapist and also have experiences overcoming life issues themselves through hypnotherapy.
